This is Home: Medgar Evers, Mississippi, and the Movement” Exhibit

The Ocean Springs Municipal Library is honored to host the “This is Home: Medgar Evers, Mississippi, and the Movement” exhibit from August 15 to September 15, courtesy of the Mississippi Department of Archives & History (MDAH). This exhibit marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Wiley Evers, a pivotal civil rights activist in Mississippi.

The exhibit comprises 14 informative panels that explore the life and enduring legacy of Medgar Evers. As the field secretary for the Mississippi NAACP, Evers investigated racial violence cases, established local NAACP branches, and registered voters. His relentless efforts brought national attention to the state’s social and political issues. Despite facing numerous threats, Evers persevered in his fight for justice until his assassination on June 12, 1963, at his home in Jackson.

Exhibit Reception: Join us for an exhibit reception on Thursday, August 22nd at 6:00 PM at the Ocean Springs Municipal Library. This event is hosted in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Humanities Council. Dr. Robert Luckett, Associate Professor and Director of the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, will present on “The Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.” The exhibit will run from August 15th to September 15th. Food and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Ocean Springs Municipal Library.
