The first Saturday in May is all about the Kentucky Derby and a local Pascagoula bar is doing their part to celebrate this iconic horse race.

The Jury Room is hosting its second annual fundraiser on May 4th with all proceeds benefitting Backpack Buddies of Pascagoula.

Last year’s event was so successful that owners Parker Pugh and Ramsay Taylor said they wanted to do it again this year.

“Backpack Buddies is fulfilling a tremendous need in our community. The ability to help feed the children in our area is a philanthropy that we will support any way we can. Hosting a fundraiser to support this cause is a way we can give to the organization, along with encouraging the community and other businesses to get involved as well,” Pugh said.

Here’s what you need to know about the event:

    • Tickets are $75 and are available at the door.
    • Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the race is scheduled to start about 5:57 p.m. CT.
    • Derby attire is required – hats for ladies and jackets for gentlemen.
    • Prizes will be awarded for Best Hat, Best Dressed, and Race Winners.
    • Live music will be provided by Jen & Tonic.
    • Food will be provided by Jack’s by the Tracks, Brady’s, and Tay’s.
    • Sponsors are Woodford Reserve & Old Forrester.

For the entry fee, patrons will receive a complimentary mint julep (the official drink of the Kentucky Derby) along with a souvenir cup.

So come out in your finery and watch the run for the roses while supporting a good cause. The race may only last approximately two minutes, but the knowledge you’ve supported a worthwhile organization will last much longer.

Backpack Buddies of Pascagoula is an organization that provides food for students who may not get enough to eat at home during the weekends and holidays when away from school.

The Jury Room is located at 702 Delmas Avenue, Pascagoula, MS (in the Downtown Plaza).
