So, now we’re off and running with the pigskin season. Pascagoula will have its home opener this Friday night at War Memorial, and all other Jackson County squads will be back in action as well. Get out and support your local team of choice.

On Aug. 5, we lost a good friend from my church and our community, Margaret Moore Hollister Wolfe. “Moore,” as many called her, was 96 years young and had a full, long life.

On Friday, August 23, most local high school football teams will hit the field to open the 2019 season. Included will be the Pascagoula Panthers, with Coach Lewis Sims going into his ninth season as head man for PHS.

Sarah Bailey Thomas, one of Pascagoula’s favorite daughters, was home again the evening of July 16. Before a packed crowd of over 350 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Sarah was the keynote speaker for the 27th Annual Boys and Girls Club of Jackson County Steak and Steak Dinner.

The Pascagoula Men’s Club is again hosting the Inshore Challenge and Cobia/Snapper Shoot-Out this year as a way to raise funds for their community contributions the rest of the year. And, during the event, Calvin Parker’s alien abduction site will be given officially recognized as a historical marker.

Once again, the Pascagoula High basketball team was excellent this year. PHS has enjoyed a run of success on the hardwood.

You’re invited to witness the drama and thrill of victory as area athletes compete for a spot at the state Special Olympics competition later this year.

Two members of this prestigious group are of significant local interest: Pascagoula’s Terrell Buckley and Patrick Willis of Ole Miss.

The Gautier High School/Middle School Baseball Dugout Club has organized an event to feature the new 2019 lineup of Players, Coaches, Gator Girls and Team Sponsors.

This year’s Battle on Buffett Beach, a fast-growing obstacle course racing (OCR) event in Pascagoula, took place on November 17 on the city’s appropriately named beachfront.

He had the perfect name for a coach … Bob “Stormy’’ Weathers. But it wasn’t his surname that led to his nickname.

Pascagoula Panther Football for three weeks in a row, three coulda/woulda/shoulda games, and Pascagoula is 0-3 in the region.

Much has been made of the recent move toward legalized sports betting in Mississippi. With football season upon us, that interest continues to grow.

Our Lady of Victories/Resurrection Catholic School inducted its second class of athletes into its School Athletic Hall of Fame on August 11 at the Delmas Activity Center in Pascagoula.

Others might think having two female kickers on the football team is strange, but to Ocean Springs coaches and teammates, its just not a big deal.
