The University of Southern Mississippi’s Union department will host its first-ever Esports Day Camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9 in the R.C. Cook University Union on the Hattiesburg campus. Designed for students ages 11–14 or in grades fifth through eighth, the camps will introduce participants to the excitement of competitive gaming while developing skills, building camaraderie and learning from experienced esports coaches.

Featuring engaging instruction in popular titles such as Minecraft and Roblox, participants will have the opportunity to improve their gameplay through hands-on experience, learn advanced strategies, and emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship and positive gaming habits.

“We’re so excited to launch these camps and continue building connections all across our community,” said Trace Rutman, Esports program director. “We are so privileged to have such an incredible space for our collegiate teams, and we can’t wait to share it with our campers. We’ve designed a program that will give campers an experience they’ve never had before. Using our gaming computers, playing under the lights and being on stage is something they will never forget.”

While Rutman focused on the camp’s immersive gaming experience, Becca Benson, associate director for Operations and Programs, emphasized the personal growth opportunities it offers participants.

“This camp is designed to be more than just fun,” said Benson. “It’s a chance for middle schoolers to build confidence, connect with others, and explore their creativity in a unique and supportive environment. Held in the same state-of-the-art facility used by our collegiate teams, the experience offers something truly special. Whether they’re exploring top-tier gaming setups, collaborating in team-based challenges, or feeling the rush of competing in a live arena setting, every moment is crafted to be memorable, meaningful and exciting.”

Registration is $99 per participant—which includes lunch and a camp T-shirt—and may be completed online. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. An early bird rate of $89 is available through Tuesday, Sept. 23.

This initiative is part of the university Union’s broader effort to provide cutting-edge programs that combine education, recreation and technology. Based on a STEM.org-accredited curriculum created by the Esports & Online Gaming Association, the camps will also include discussions on the latest trends in esports, potential career pathways, fun university experiences, prizes, and the importance of strategic thinking and teamwork.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is a comprehensive public research institution delivering transformative programs on campuses in Hattiesburg and Long Beach, at teaching and research sites in central and southern Mississippi, as well as online. Founded in 1910, USM is one of only 130 universities in the nation to earn the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education’s "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” designation, and its robust research enterprise includes experts in ocean science and engineering, polymer science and engineering, and sport venue safety and security, among others. USM is also one of only 40 institutions in the nation accredited in theatre, art and design, dance and music. As an economic driver, USM generates an annual economic impact of more than $600 million across the state. USM welcomes a diverse student body of approximately 15,000, representing 71 countries, all 50 states, and every county in Mississippi. USM students have collected four Truman Scholarships and 36 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, while also leading Mississippi with 24 Goldwater Scholarships, an honor that recognizes the next generation of great research scientists. Home to the Golden Eagles, USM competes in 17 Division I sports sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For more information, visit usm.edu.
