The Singing River Genealogy-Local History Library at Pascagoula will host Safeguarding Stories for families at two free workshops in April. The first session will be held on Thursday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Lucedale/George County Public Library located at 507 Oak Street across from City Park. The Genealogy Library will host a second session on Wednesday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Pascagoula Public Library located at 3214 Pascagoula Street near downtown. The library and the Mississippi Digital Library are partnering to preserve old family documents and photos, and patrons can learn the reasons for doing so at this free workshop. All images scanned will be considered for the Mississippi Digital Library and Singing River Library collections. Genealogy Library manager and archivist Amanda Brooks stated, “I consider Safeguarding Stories to be one of the most important programs Singing River has offered up till this point. Our mission as a cultural institution is more if we cannot partner with our community and assist them in preserving their own history. Providing a space for our patrons to take an active role in saving their history, especially in such a high-risk disaster area, speaks to what we as a community entity are all about.” All local residents are encouraged to bring area photographs, family documents, and/or 3-D items to the Lucedale or Pascagoula libraries and have them scanned or photographed for free. All patrons will receive a CD of their digital images. All images scanned will be considered for addition to the Mississippi Digital Library and Singing River Library’s collections. Conditions apply. Items per session will be capped at ten. Patrons are welcome to have more than one session, time permitting. Each session is estimated to take up to 30 minutes. Walk-ins are appreciated. For more information please contact the library archivist at 228-769-3078. Registration is suggested as seating is limited. Sign up at the Pascagoula or Lucedale libraries. The Singing River Genealogy-Local History Library is located on the second floor of the Pascagoula library located at 3214 Pascagoula Street.
