On Monday night in girls’ Class 5A state playoff action on Monday night, the four teams in the “Southern Six” all came up short and saw their respective seasons come to an end.

On Tuesday night, as the boys’ joined the fray, things were only a bit better for the quartet of area teams on the hardwood.

Only the West Harrison Hurricanes managed a win in the opening round of the state playoffs, as they knocked off visiting Brookhaven 57-49.

Elsewhere, the season came to an end for three other area teams, as Gautier lost on the road to South Jones 59-52 as did Pearl River Central 66-48 to home-standing Florence while Vancleave hosted Wayne County but the site didn’t really make any difference as the War Eagles beat the Bulldogs 57-41.

West Harrison will hit the road to Hattiesburg Saturday night to pace the Tigers in the second round.
