The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Park Campus has recorded its largest membership increase among coast participants following the opening of a new dedicated space in September 2025.

The program now serves 276 members, reflecting a surge driven by increased engagement and opportunities for social connection.

OLLI provides adults 50 and older with access to classes, seminars and field trips. The Gulf Park location’s new space has enhanced the experience by giving members a place to gather beyond the classroom, fostering friendships and continued interaction.

Paula Mathis, OLLI director, said the growth is tied to both the upgraded facility and word of mouth among participants. The space allows members to remain after classes to socialize through games, puzzles and books, further strengthening community relationships.

Mary DeWitt, an OLLI coast member who moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2018, joined the program in early 2019 after discovering it at a senior center. She said the variety of classes keeps her engaged.

“I keep going because of the new and interesting classes. I want to learn. I love it,” said DeWitt.

DeWitt said she especially enjoys courses such as jewelry making, pottery and Mississippi Gulf Coast history. She has also encouraged neighbors to join, many of whom have since become members.

Trena Turrentine, who joined in January 2026, found OLLI while visiting her local library. She and her friends were looking for activities to keep them busy during retirement and decided to join after hearing about the group for years. Stepping into the new space, she noticed people enjoying each other’s company through games and conversation. She knew she had made the right decision to meet new people and explore new hobbies.

“We have gone to several presentations and thoroughly enjoyed them. The OLLI space is beautiful, and there is something available all the time,” said Turrentine.

Mathis said she plans to continue expanding opportunities for learning and engagement as interest grows.

Southern Miss is one of 124 institutions nationwide offering OLLI programs and remains the only university in Mississippi to provide university-affiliated lifelong learning opportunities.
