More Than Milk: The Delicious Ways Mississippi Celebrates National Dairy Month

June is National Dairy Month,  a month to celebrate the hard-working dairy farm families and the nutritious dairy foods they provide. Mississippi is home to 25 dairy farmers, most of whom operate family-owned farms. In 2025, Mississippi produced 8.8 million gallons of milk, with the top two milk-producing counties being Walthall and Marion. Did you know that Mississippi’s most consumed dairy product is ice cream, no surprise, followed by milk. Here are some simple ways to support your local dairy farmers and bring nutritious treats into your summer routine.

As temperatures rise, staying hydrated is essential for ourselves and our children. While good ‘ole water should be the foundation of your hydration routine, sometimes we need a little extra if we’ve been out in the heat for some time. Rehydrating with a simple glass of milk or a homemade yogurt-and-fruit smoothie will provide fluids and electrolytes. Milk contains natural electrolytes that can help replenish and nourish with essential nutrients everybody needs. You can also turn your favorite smoothie recipe into popsicles by pouring it into popsicle molds and freezing it at home. It is a perfect treat on a hot day!

Snacking during the summer shouldn’t be just for the kids! Elevate summer snacks for the park, pool, or any afternoon with cheese and yogurts. Adding cheese cubes, string cheese, spreadable cheeses, or yogurts to popular snack foods like fruits, crackers, pretzels, or popcorn helps avoid energy crashes and fuels them with high-quality protein and B vitamins.

But don’t overlook stopping in to your local ice cream or frozen yogurt shop to celebrate June Dairy Month. Whether you are looking for decadent homemade scoops, historical soda fountains, or over-the-top culinary creations, Mississippi features an impressive lineup of top-tier ice cream shops. Try Mayday Ice Cream in Jackson, Mississippi, known for high-quality ingredients and a scratch-made approach. The Oxford Creamery is a must-visit destination in North Mississippi, serving scoops like “Campfire Coma” and “Cereal Milk.” When in Crystal Springs, stop in The Mosh Pit Creamery and Cafe, a veteran- and family-owned spot that boasts an expansive wall of 36 hard-scoop flavors, specialty malts, and warm bubble puffles.

    Triple Berry Power-Up

This classic blend is highly rich in antioxidants, making it an excellent option for long-lasting daytime energy.

1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)

    ¾ cup milk

½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt for a protein boost

1 tablespoon ground flaxseed or chia seeds (optional)

1 ripe banana to add smooth sweetness

    Blend till smooth.

Can pour into popsicle trays and freeze.
