FirstGen Forward is recognizing Mississippi State as one of only 18 U.S. institutions of higher education among its newest class of FirstGen Forward Network Champions.
Network Champion institutions are an exclusive group serving as national leaders in advancing first-generation education efforts and contributing to evidence-based practices, leadership engagement, and scaling student supports.
Nearly 38% of MSU students are “first generation,” meaning they will become the first in their immediate family to receive a four-year college degree. First-gen programming on campus is facilitated through the Division of Access, Opportunity and Success, which hosts activities and provides services throughout the school year to strengthen support through graduation.
“We are extremely honored to be selected as a Network Champion in the FirstGen Forward Network,” said MSU Vice President for Access, Opportunity and Success Ra’Sheda Forbes. “MSU has a long record of supporting student success in a wide variety of ways, and we strive to help our first-gen students with practical and meaningful programs and resources.”
FirstGen Forward CEO Maurice Jones said, “With 54% of current undergraduate students nationwide identifying as first-gen, achieving unprecedented first-gen student success will have a life-changing impact, as college completion is a significant contributor to education, workforce, and life success for the families of graduates.
“To be named a Network Champion is a testament to the work of Mississippi State University, evidence that it is a national leader in this area, and a role model for the field for years to come,” Jones added.
