Mississippi Healthcare Worker Spotlight, Aliyah Barnes

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This beautiful quote about healthcare workers perfectly captures the essence of their craft. Healthcare is one of the most impactful industries to work in. From managing patients to juggling work-life balance, there’s no doubt that healthcare personnel carry a responsibility that most of us will never truly understand.

Meet Aliyah Barnes— Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Aliyah’s journey into healthcare started when she was just a little girl, watching her grandmother make a positive difference in people’s lives as a nurse. At the time, she didn’t fully grasp the impact. But over the years, that quiet inspiration grew into something bigger—a calling she could no longer ignore. When it was all said and done, Aliyah decided to follow the legacy of her grandmother.

A Day in the Life of an LPN

Now a Licensed Practical Nurse, Aliyah spends her days caring for patients, helping with daily needs, giving medications, and offering a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on when it is needed most. “Becoming an LPN was the perfect second step into the healthcare world,” she says. “It’s a role where I can learn, grow, and serve.”

    Working Through the Challenges

Although she experiences the rewarding feeling that working in healthcare brings, like any other profession, she has experienced challenges. One of her greatest challenges has been dealing with the mental toll associated with being a caretaker. “The emotional toll can be heavy,” she admits. “Especially when you lose a patient or see someone struggle. But it’s those moments that remind me how much compassion matters.”

And yet, for all the difficulty, there’s just as much reward. Aliyah lights up when she talks about the people she cares for. “Seeing someone get better—and knowing I helped make that possible—that’s the best part,” she says. “The gratitude from patients and their families is everything.”

    More Than a Job

Healthcare is one of those fields that is reserved for special people who truly care. Aliyah’s advice? “Go into this field with your heart open. It takes patience, resilience, and empathy. Never stop learning, and remember: small acts of kindness often mean the most in this line of work.”

    Transforming Lives Daily

In a field where each shift brings a new challenge, it also brings a new opportunity to care for those who need it most. What a blessing it is to have wonderful people, like Aaliyah, showing up in this field! She does not just help patients— she transforms lives daily by walking in her calling.
