Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has been named a national finalist for the prestigious Bellwether Award, recognized in the Workforce Development category for its leadership in creating innovative solutions that connect education with regional labor market needs. MGCCC is the only college in Mississippi selected among this year’s finalists.
The Bellwether Award, presented by the Bellwether College Consortium, honors excellence and innovation in community college programs across three categories:
- Instructional Programs and Services
- Workforce Development
- Planning, Governance, and Finance
Each year, the competition highlights cutting-edge initiatives that address critical issues in higher education and workforce advancement.
MGCCC earned national recognition as a 2026 Bellwether Award finalist for its pivotal role in developing the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN)—the nation’s first statewide AI workforce initiative.
Launched in 2023 with a $1 million grant from AccelerateMS, MAIN unites all Mississippi colleges and universities with global partners such as Intel, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expand AI education and workforce readiness. Through free, self-paced online courses and a network of statewide AI labs, MAIN has already engaged thousands of Mississippians—including more than 5,000 workforce learners and 3,000 K–12 educators—helping them gain practical AI skills and credentials.
Anchored by MGCCC, the initiative’s collaborative structure ensures equitable access across rural and urban regions, supports faculty development through programs like the NVIDIA Faculty Ambassador Network, and promotes applied learning through the new AI Innovation Hub, developed in partnership with AWS and the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services.
“Being named a Bellwether finalist is a tremendous honor that reflects MGCCC’s leadership in advancing artificial intelligence education and workforce development,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC President. “Through initiatives like MAIN and our technical training programs like AI and Data Technology, we are ensuring that Mississippians have access to the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing economy. Additionally, we are integrating AI into programs across our Career and Technical fields to prepare students to meet the workforce demands of tomorrow while driving innovation and opportunity across our state.”
MAIN serves as a scalable, replicable model for how states can align education, government, and industry to prepare citizens for success in the AI-driven economy.
The Bellwether Finalists represent the top programs selected from more than 100 submissions nationwide. Finalists will present their initiatives at the 32nd Annual Community College Futures Assembly, to be held February 22–24, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, where winners in each category will be announced.
The Bellwether College Consortium, in partnership with leading national higher education organizations, annually recognizes institutions driving meaningful innovation and impact in the community college sector.
