Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $3 million grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s Strategic Multimodal Investments Fund. This funding will be for Stennis International Airport’s North Apron Expansion Project.

The north apron expansion will construct a new 90,000 SF concrete parking apron adjacent to Site 2. This extension aims to create additional parking space for aircraft and improve safety by enhancing aircraft staging and taxi flow efficiency.

“Stennis International Airport is grateful for the grant award received from the Mississippi Department of Transportation. This grant will be instrumental in Stennis International Airport’s continued growth by supporting new jobs at the airport, while also increasing the capacity and efficiency of our apron parking and aircraft servicing areas”, remarked Austin Jenkins, Stennis International Airport Director.

The $3 million award was one of $30 million in grant awards designated for intermodal transportation projects statewide. The Mississippi Department of Transportation awarded these grants to railroads, ports, and airports across the state through the new Strategic Multi-Modal Investments Fund created by the Mississippi Legislature in 2023. This new funding program aims to enhance freight movement capacity, boost economic activity, and promote long-term economic growth within the state.

The Stennis International Airport’s North Apron Expansion Project will mark a significant investment in Hancock County, enhancing aviation infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and supporting existing and new defense industries.
