For many years I wrote a weekly restaurant review that had one caveat, I couldn’t write about the same restaurant twice. That’s 52 new restaurants a year! So, yes, I think it is fair to say that the coast has a plethora of good places to eat. We have local po-boy places, a hand full of good Vietnamese shops, Greek, fine dining with some of the best steaks ever (Thirty-Two) and even a few places that make crazy good fried baloney sandwiches!
Vung Tau is a family run Vietnamese restaurant on Oak Street in Biloxi that is one of my favorites. Most people that go get the pho, the national soup like dish of Vietnam, but there are also quite a few dishes with pork and shrimp combinations that are excellent.
If I feel like I am coming down with something or am just worn out, I go to Vung Tau and order a bowl of pho broth, no veggies, no meat, and I swear it has magical qualities. It is so rich, delicious and nutritious it really feels like a cure all. Instant health.
They have a good selection of vermicelli, egg and rice noodles, and almost a dozen varieties of pho. If you go for lunch, try the beef and broccoli or spring rolls. The Vietnamese style po-boys a very good too, they also have red, green and panang curry.
If you really want something delicious and filling, try the beef stew at Henry’s Café and Bakery in D’Iberville. Beef stew at a Vietnamese restaurant? Yes, if you know your history, you might remember that Vietnam was a colony of France for many years, so you will find French influence int their food. They also make great French bread, crispy and delicious. If you want to make homemade pizza buy raw dough and roll it out yourself.
There is a new Greek restaurant in Biloxi called Acropolis that has a nice menu and exceptional good gyros that are worth a try. Just across the street is the Bella, a great breakfast place and bakery that makes the best bread in town.
It’s quite a drive from my house on Gill Ave, but Sicilian II on Pass Road, next to where Mr. Greek used to be, is another great Italian restaurant. Great pizzas, ravioli, and stuffed manicotti and some fabulous desserts too!
Get out and explore the restaurant scene on the Coast, you just might be surprised at what you might find!
