Mississippi State faculty, staff and students commemorated Arbor Day on Friday, Feb. 7, by planting trees along Hail State Boulevard.

Mississippi State again is being recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for excellent integration of community engagement with university teaching and learning strategies. The Carnegie Foundation announced Jan. 31 that MSU is receiving the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an endorsement which is valid until 2026.

Aaron Cleveland, instructor in the Instrumentation and Control Technology program at the Jackson County Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, has been selected as the 2020 Educator of the Year by ETA International, an internationally recognized certification association founded in 1978 by electronics professionals.

Angela Chandler, an administrative assistant for the College & Career Technical Institute (CCTI) for the Pascagoula-Gautier School District (PGSD), has been named Staff Member of the Year.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) annual celebration of Black History Month throughout February will mark the important achievements by black Americans, and the central role of African Americans in U.S. and Southern Miss history.

Five students from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College were selected as semifinalists for the highly selective and competitive Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. They are Edgar Marquez of Gautier, Austin Baldwin of D’Iberville, Ciara Brewer of Lucedale, Gloria Giddes of Gulfport and Katelyn Winstead of Ocean Springs. 

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College released the President and Vice President’s lists for the fall 2019 semester.

As technological advancements continue, tech-related fields continue to be the fastest-growing going into 2020.

Two students in the Commercial Truck Driving (CDL) program at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College are participating in the F.E.B. Distributing Truck Driver Apprenticeship program that began in October 2019.  The two students –James Holland of Gulfport and Adam Graham of Long Beach– are scheduled to complete the program in eight to 10 weeks.

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has announced that Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is a finalist for the Association’s 2020 Awards of Excellence.

The Willis H. Lott Learning Resources Center (LRC) at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus has partnered with the Mississippi Humanities Council to host a family literacy program. The weekly programs will be held on the second floor of LRC each Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., from Jan. 28 to March 10.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Polymer Science and Engineering undergraduate program has reached a significant milestone with national accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This marks the program’s inaugural accreditation since the University began offering engineering courses in 2012.

Tara Cooper, a third grade teacher at Jackson Elementary, has been named the Jackson Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Dawn Smith, a science teacher at Gautier High School (GHS) has been named GHS Teacher of the Year.
