A Taste of Greece: Discovering the Flavors of Acropolis Greek Restaurant in Biloxi

I am a big fan of Greek food, its spicy, hearty and bold and so I was delighted with the Acropolis Greek restaurant recently opened in Biloxi on Howard Avenue. Many years ago, I used to go to a Greek place run by an older Greek lady who became upset if you didn’t finish everything on your plate. She would sit at your table and question you about what you didn’t like. It was a good incentive to come with a big appetite.

My favorite dish was a grilled pork tenderloin, loaded with oregano and other good spices. Acropolis doesn’t have that dish (although they do serve Greek meatballs, which I haven’t tried yet but will soon), but everything I have tried there was delicious, especially the Greek salad and the gyro. In fact, a good gyro has to be one of my favorite sandwiches, especially when it is loaded with plenty of tzatziki sauce. This creamy, spicy sauce is traditionally made with cucumber, yogurt, and garlic, and originally comes from the island of Paros,

A well made gyro is most often made with pork, but it can be made with other meats. It is roasted on a vertical rotisserie, to be absolutely authentic. The meat is sliced off the rotisserie and served wrapped in pita bread, along with tomato and onion. The only problem you might have is finding good pita bread.

A traditional Greek salad, known as horiatiki (village salad), is made with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onion, bell peppers and olives and is topped with feta cheese and olive oil, but no lettuce! This salad is hearty enough to be the main course, especially on a hot summer day. Sere the salad with a good Greek wine (if you can find one, or an Italina white.

Acropolis also has good selection of appetizers. I love nothing better than sharing a good assortment of small plates with a friend or two. That way you get a good idea what the chef, and kitchen, is all about, with out trying to make your way through a huge portion. Acropolis has about a dozen apps to choose from, but my all time favorites have to be tzatziki and pita bread and calamari. I also love the Greek salads!

They have teen gyro variations, and a good selection of Greek dinners. Visit Acropolis, then get inspired and have a go at making a Greek meal for your family and friends.
