COVID vaccine now available to people 65+, others with underlying conditions

The vaccine for COVID-19 is now available to Mississippians aged 65 or older, as well as anybody above the age of 18 with underlying health conditions.

The Mississippi State Department of Health, partnering with University of Mississippi Medical Center, is now allowing eligible individuals to schedule an appointment online or through their COVID-19 call center at 1-877-978-6453.

The screening will only take a few minutes and consists of a short set of questions to verify whether a person is qualified to receive the vaccine.

Before today, appointment scheduling was limited to healthcare workers, however, Governor Tate Reeves noted during his press conference on Tuesday that teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other first responders will be offered the vaccine in the very near future.

“You’re on deck,” he said, speaking to those of the above occupations. “The next time we have an update, it will be to announce the vaccine will become available to you. Please stay tuned.”

The vaccine, which is given out in two different doses approximately three to four weeks apart, can be received at any of these private providers, as well as several health departments across the state—including Jackson County and Harrison County along the Gulf Coast.
