    Fun with Frida Kahlo!

The second Saturday in July means it’s time for the annual Frida Fest in Old Town Bay St. Louis. The festival will celebrate legendary artist Frida Kahlo with art, food, music, and of course the always exciting lookalike contest.

The festival begins the morning of July 8 with the Frida 5Kahlo Fun Run at 8 a.m. Starting and ending at the Mockingbird Café and hosted by Bay St. Louis Running Company, this 5K offers a race for runners of all ages.

Businesses across Bay St. Louis will have their doors open all day, many of which will be offering food and live music. The main event, the lookalike contest, will feature dozens of Frida Kahlo enthusiasts vying to win this year’s crown.

The lookalike contest is $10 to participate with the small fee including a goodie bag and one free drink at the Mockingbird Café. All proceeds will go to charity, and sounds will be provided by DJ Doug. Contestants will begin lining up for the runway at 6:30 p.m. with the actual event beginning at 7 p.m.

“Expect the streets to be filled with Fridas,” Laura Hurt, manager of the Mockingbird Café, said. “There will be lots of flare as contestants bring their A-game. Frida is a fun figure, and everyone gets into the excitement of dressing up and celebrating. All the local businesses participate, and it will bring out a big crowd.”

Hurt suggests you go ahead and sign up if you plan on participating in the 5K or the lookalike contest as residents across the Coast are already gearing up for the big day.

“We travel to be part of the festival. The costumes are amazing. There are young children and women dressing as Friday, and even a few men get wild and become Frida. It’s a party for sure,” Ocean Springs resident Brandi Hoxie explained. “Frida Kahlo overcame a lot in her life as a person and an artist, and this is a way of celebrating her success and art style.”
