A pair of girls teams in the “Southern Six” extended their seasons by at least another game with big wins in the state basketball playoffs Friday night while yet another three area squads saw their respective seasons come to an end.

In Class 5A action, the home-standing West Harrison ‘Canes nipped Wayne County 38-36 in the second round and in the process earned a spot in the Class 5A South State quarterfinals which begin Thursday. West Harrison will travel to Pearl River Community College in Poplarville for its next game in that quarterfinal round.

Sophomore forward Jalynn Applewhite posted a double-double for the Lady Canes with 11 points and 12 rebounds while senior forward Madison Collins added nine points to the winning effort and sophomore guard Ty Gooden also added 9 points as well as six steals for WHHS.

West Harrison, under the guidance of head coach Patty Norwood, will meet West Jones at PRCC on Friday night at 6:30.

The Pass Christian girls were the only other “Southern Six” squad to pull out a win Friday night as Lady Pirates sank Newton County 43-33 in the Class 4A state playoffs. Pass will now face Raymond in the quarterfinals at PRCC.

Elsewhere in Class 4A action, Bay High went on the road to Quitman and dropped a close 27-24 decision.

In Class 6A, in addition to Gulfport beating D’Iberville and Biloxi beating Meridian, Northwest Rankin knocked off Ocean Springs 59-43 to end the season for the Lady Greyhounds. The Harrison Central girls were set to face Brandon Saturday night.
