PASCAGOULA — The Grand Magnolia Fall Festival Music Series wraps up with a trio of shows in Pascagoula this month.
The inaugural appearance by New Orleans Jazz Fest legend Sonny Landreth along with return engagements by Deana Carter and Mac McAnally will close out the annual affair at The Grand Magnolia Ballroom.
Tickets are on sale for all three shows at www.grandmagmusic.com and also available in person at Scranton’s Restaurant in Pascagoula.
Louisiana slide guitar icon Sonny Landreth will play the Grand Magnolia on Friday, Nov. 10th with longtime collaborator Steve Conn and his band. Landreth is an award-winning musician who has appeared at Jazz Fest more than 20 times, including several while sitting in with Pascagoula native and his old friend the late Jimmy Buffett. One of the legends in the world of slide guitar aficionados, his style derives from Cajun music, zydeco, Delta blues, swamp pop, R&B, and rockabilly in addition to myriad other rootsy sounds.
Landreth’s groundbreaking work has long mixed familiarity with experimentation, and Blacktop Run, his most recent album, stretches from hard-edged electric instrumentals to wistful acoustic ballads.
Across his long career, Landreth has garnered two Grammy nominations, clocked multiple appearances at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and received wide-ranging acclaim from players and fans worldwide.
In fact, the Guitar God himself Clapton once said of Landreth “Sonny Landreth is probably the most underestimated musician on the planet, and also probably one of the most advanced.”
You can’t get much better of a recommendation than that y’all.
After a sold-out, standing-room-only debut in Pascagoula last Fall, three-time Grammy Award Nominee Deana Carter is coming back to South Mississippi by popular demand.
Carter will be playing an intimate show featuring all of her hits including “Strawberry Wine”, “Did I Shave my legs for This”, “And We Danced Anyway” and “You and Tequila” as well as many other at the Grand Magnolia Ballroom in Pascagoula on Friday, Nov. 17th.
Show time is set for 7:30 p.m., for “An intimate evening with Deana Carter”. The show is part of the five-show “Fall Festival Series” presented by Grand Magnolia Music.
Carter’s initial performance in Pascagoula last year was one of the biggest in the decade-old history of Grand Magnolia Music, and her return engagement was in the works even as the finals strains of “Strawberry Wine” were still wafting through the streets and into the night after the show concluded.
She is still celebrating the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough debut album “Did I shave my legs for this”, which, of course, is anchored by the dreamy super hit ”Strawberry Wine” which was named “Single of the Year” by The Country Music Association. The song also garnered nominations for “Song of the Year’, “Video of the year” and “Female Vocalist of the Year”.
The album “Did I Shave My Legs For This?” boasts six songs co-written and co-produced by Carter and was released to strong reviews in late summer 1996. Plans for a 2021 anniversary tour were delayed until last year and throughout this year for various reasons.
Sandwiched in between the Friday shows of Landreth and Carter is the second appearance for Mac McAnally in Pascagoula this year. The Pascagoula show on Sunday, Nov. 12th sold out in less than seven hours, in what was a record-breaking reaction for fans of the longtime Buffett collaborator and member of the Coral Reefer Band.
The Grand Mag Music Fall Festival series began with an appearance by Firefall in late October. Grand Mag Music is sponsored by Scrantoon’s Restaurant and Catering of Pascagoula, Roy’s Bar, Liquors Unlimited and Dairy Queen all of Pascagoula as well as Burnhams Drugs with locations all across Jackson County. Also Cathead Vodka, The Beau Rivage Resort and Casino as well as Lagniappe Weekly of Mobile are all proud sponsors of Gran Mag Music.
