Prep hoops: Region 8-4A Tournament in Bay St. Louis is a unique affair this week

The Region 8-4A basketball tournament begins at The Tigerdome in Bay St. Louis Monday night.

This tourney may be the most unique of the five postseason affairs taking place in the “Southern Six” this week, thanks to both the implementation as well as the logistics.

Unlike most leagues across the state of Mississippi, Region 8-4A has an odd number of teams on both the boys’ and girls’ sides of the brackets. Therefore, unlike all of Class 6A and 5A, in which three out of four teams make the state playoffs, in Region 8-4A there will be two teams on each side that won’t make the playoffs.

And one team on each side of the bracket will see its season come to a sudden halt after Monday night’s games.

Each team that loses the opening round games on Monday in the Bay will be eliminated and move on to baseball and softball season, which starts next week.

Both Pass Christian squads, the Pirates and the Lady Pirates are the top seeds in the Region 8-4A Tournament. The PCHS girls went a perfect 8-0 in region play this season under the direction of head coach  Greta Ainsworth, while the Pirates under the guidance of veteran head coach Buddy Kennedy finished league play at 7-1.

Also, this event will be one of the only ones in the state that will play games every day this week, as two games will be contested each night starting at 6 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Here is the complete schedule of the two Class 4A region tournaments involving teams in the “Southern Six” this week.
