MAIN’s mission is straightforward: to help Mississippians understand, use and apply artificial intelligence. To accomplish this goal, MAIN offers free AI education and resources through statewide partners in the private and public sectors. Learn more about the initiative in the full fact check below.
Officially launched in May, MAIN is already serving as an example for other states as they implement their own programs.
“When MAIN was launched, it was recognized as the nation’s first statewide AI network and, at the time, the only initiative of its kind,” said a MAIN spokesperson. “Since then, we have seen growing momentum across the country, with other states developing AI-related efforts focused on education, workforce, research, government and industry. MAIN also continues to represent Mississippi as a national leader in this space.”
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has made AI education and investment a major priority for the state. In January, he announced that xAI, the American artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, is building an AI data center in Southaven. The new center is estimated to represent more than $20 billion in corporate investments. It is one of several announced across the state.
Over the past two years, lawmakers have announced at least seven major data center projectsacross the state. Locations for these centers include Southaven, Vicksburg, Clinton, Ridgeland, Brandon, Madison County and Lauderdale County.
When Reeves announced the MAIN initiative, he said the statewide framework would help put Mississippi at the forefront of technological development.
“Mississippi isn’t just attracting the industries of the future; we’re building them,” Reeves said. “This framework is another example of our state leading the way in American innovation. Artificial intelligence is going to transform industries, and this cutting-edge framework gives our students, educators, and workforce development partners a clear roadmap to ensure Mississippians have the education and skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy.”
MAIN is headquartered at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College with satellite offices across the state.
