    Basketball season is slowly but steadily reaching a full-court press in the “Southern Six” as we tip off our prep hoops coverage at 228sports.com presented by ourmshome.com this week.
    Pascagoula traveled to Gulfport in a big Class 6A early season match-up Tuesday night. The Admirals defeated the Panthers 59-57 in an exciting game and improved to 4-1 on the young season with the win. Amir Abdul-Rauf finished with 14 points, Keanu Patrick 12, and Kamari Mitchell 10 to pace Gulfport.

    The action marked the first for the Admirals in over a week since a win over Picayune on Nov. 4th. In that one, Gulfport won 63-54 as Keanu Patrick finished with 16 points, EJ Collier 12, and Kamari Mitchell 11.

    The Panthers were coming off 58-55 win over Yazoo City over the weekend in Madison at “The Jump” tourney on the campus of Madison Central High School.
    In the girls’ game Tuesday night, Pascagoula earned a split on the evening as the Lady Panthers picked up a 28-24 win over the Gulfport girls. Pascagoula now stands 4-2 on the year.
    Also, there are at least four Thanksgiving tournaments on tap in our coverage area next week beginning on Monday. Gulfport, West Harrison, Gautier, and Picayune are all hosting two-day tourneys, with play taking place on Monday and Tuesday.

    In Gulfport, boys’ action on Monday includes Biloxi facing Madison-Ridgeland Academy at 4:30 and the host Admirals meeting the Bay High Tigers in the nightcap at 7:30.
    A girls game tips off the action in the Gulfport tourney at 3 p.m., Monday with Bay High taking on MRA. The Gulfport Lady Admirals face Blount High of Mobile at 7 p.m.
    On Tuesday, winners meet winners and the losing teams face one another as well to wrap up play.
    In Picayune on Monday, the four-game slate kicks off with an all “Southern Six” match-up as the Biloxi Lady Indians take on the St. Martin Lady Yellow Jackets at 3 p.m. The other girls game at 6 p.m., is also a local match-up as the home-standing Lady Tide meets the George County Lady Rebels.
    In boys’ action at Kelly Wise gym on the Picayune campus Monday, Grace Baptist takes on McComb at 4:30 while the host Maroon Tide faces Grace Christian at 7:30.
    On Tuesday, winners meet winners and the losing teams face one another as well to wrap up play.
    In Gautier, both Gautier’s boys and girls and D’Iberville’s girls and boys teams will all be in action.
    At West Harrison High School, the Hurricane Holiday Tournament will feature the WHHS boys along with the Ocean Springs boys.
