The number of beachside joints has grown dramatically over the years on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. All of them are pretty cool, built up on pilings, and offer great views of the Mississippi Sound. They all offer typical tourist menus, which means they offer a little bit of everything, but I always worry about a menu that is a bit too diverse. I prefer a themed menu, one that tells me the chef or cook is in their zone, cooking what they cook best.
The Blind Tiger has a different vibe, one that I find comfortable. It’s a classic beachside hangout to be sure, but the menu has more of a local feel. When you see smoked tuna dip on a menu, you know they are in tune with the locals. Tuna dip has been a favorite on the Coast for countless years.
Everybody has wings these days, but TBT has a recipe all their own. It’s certainly not just roasted wings and hot sauce. It’s a homemade concoction that is both spicy and sweet and is called a Cantina sauce, which is typically made with fire-roasted tomatoes, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and hot sauce.
The shrimp tacos may be the most popular item on the menu, served with the same delicious sauce. The boudin balls are very good, as was the jalapeño queso dip. They also offer a good selection of burgers, hand-cut fries, plates, tacos, and nachos. There is certainly something for everyone on this menu.
There is a big deck with lots of shade for those hot summer days and even an outside bar. Inside is open and airy, with lots of windows, so it’s bright and has a fresh feel. I’ve got to say that on my last visit, we had one of the best waitresses I’ve had in ages. Friendly, fast, efficient, and always had a ready smile on her face. I had an urgent need for a glass of water, motioned to her, and within seconds a glass of water was on the table. That’s serious service.
