Friday night high school football is back!

I know; I know. It’s way too hot for football, but alas, the time is here – ready or not.

Civic clubs build up our community adding extra flavor to our society and way of life. They keep us connected.

When I moved to Lucedale in 1988 to work as a staff reporter for the Mississippi Press newspaper, I obtained a list of clubs active in the George County community.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Pride of Mississippi Marching Band and the Dixie Darlings will kick off the 2023 football season with Pride Preview Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Southern Station behind the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation (GCCF) donated $100,000 to the United Way for Jackson & George Counties. This donation will support the Long-Term Recovery Committee (LTRC), which was formed in the aftermath of a tornado that devastated the Moss Point community on June 19, 2023. 

Employees at Chevron Pascagoula Refinery recently supported a My BELONGings donation drive that helped CASA of Southeast Mississippi. Chevron filled dozens of duffel bags with essentials and comfort items so children entering the foster care system had something to call their own.

Foodies from near and far all agree:  Bigger things are yet to come for an up-and-coming barbeque competition in downtown Pascagoula.

Half Shell Oyster House, Southern Pearl Oyster House, and Rack House Steaks and Spirits, are Collecting Donations for those in Lake Charles, LA.

The Mississippi Main Street Association (MMSA) celebrated achievements of Mississippi Main Street Communities with a special virtual Annual Awards presentation this year.

Reagan Scott said she’s not the type of person who would donate an organ to a stranger; however, that’s exactly what the Mississippi State senior accounting major did when she learned of another student’s need of a lifesaving kidney transplant.

OK, so Major League Baseball is finally going to grace us with its presence again, scheduled to start an abbreviated 2020 season on July 23.

Google announced on Thursday that it will be opening its first U.S. Google Operations Center in Southaven, Mississippi.

The City of Gautier today announced that it has been awarded $3.5 million in Gulf Coast Restoration Fund monies and $1.5 million from the state Legislature’s bond bill to purchase the former Singing River Mall property.

As communities around the country and the world are working together to promote equality and ask its members to treat those who may look different from them with respect, local leaders organizing marches in coastal Mississippi are hoping to do just that.
