Fall Fashion Must-Haves Get Vintage Kick and Bold, Bright Colors

Saying goodbye to long summer days is never easy in the Magnolia State, but as autumn begins to grace us, we do welcome the shift of cooler days and it’s time to truly embrace the luxe layers and rich textures of fall wardrobes.

The best trends have much to offer as we move from colorful swimwear and flirty sundresses in favor of wide-leg pants and puffed sleeves. There might even be a couple of vintage favorites making a comeback.

Wide-leg pants were first popularized back in the 70s, and we’re reimagined throughout stores and runways earlier this year for spring. For the fall fashion season, wider legs will stick around and take over denim, flowy silks, staple cotton, and jumpsuits.

As for the puffed sleeve trend, it was a must-have in spring 2018 and it has made its way to fall 2022 as a larger-than-life sleeve. There will be many variations such as the balloon and the Juliet sleeves with Victorian-inspired tops and romantic dresses.

Katie Hinkle, the owner of Lee Tracy in downtown Ocean Springs, said additionally expect to see tons of feminine florals.

“And don’t forget about building your collection with the classics this fall,” Hinkle said adding that the sneaker will continue to have a strong presence.

“Don’t be afraid to pair them with a cute maxi,” Hinkle said.

Lee Tracy was founded by Hinkle’s mother and father, Lee and Mike McLaughlin in 1978. Hinkle said she is adding a new go-to fashion destination for Gulf Coast women later this year in Pascagoula.

Fall must-haves will also feature several hues typically reserved for spring and summer including lots of bold, vibrant colors, especially greens.

“Usually we don’t start seeing those until around the holidays but green is a hot color for fall,” said Ashley Verrett, owner and founder of Zeal Boutique with locations in Pascagoula, downtown Ocean Springs, and Mobile.

“Also, we’ll see the typical neutrals, but be sure to add in a ton of orchid, purples, and blues,” Verrett said.

Pink seems to be a tried and true Mississippi Gulf Coast, southern-girl fashion staple.

“Pink is always a huge hit all season for us,” Verrett said. “We tend to sell pink so well no matter the season, especially a hot pink shacket or chunky sweater.”

Bright colors will spill over from clothes to jewelry with bold, fun, but elegant and unique pieces such as Taylor Shaye Designs online, which was created by Shaye in 2015 when she was unable to find the right jewelry for each of her outfits.

“Our customers have been loving Taylor Shaye,” Verrett said. “It’s bold pieces that really stand out but also great styles for our neutral women too.”

And back for another spin in the spotlight are cowgirl boots and sequin everything because everyone deserves a little sparkle with a kick.

“We saw them both in the spring and summer,” Verrett said. “Cowgirl boots will continue to be huge in the winter, too.”

Fall trends are the styles true fashion fans get excited about and see as an opportunity for a fresh fashion update. So pull those timeless key pieces out of the closet and bolster them with a few new, trendy fall staples for a crisp, new wardrobe.
