The hot yeast rolls. Square slices of ooey-gooey pepperoni and cheese pizza. And, who could forget the mouth-watering, peanut butter balls.
Those were the good ol’ days of cafeteria food in school? Now, think about missing that meal as a student, or not eating at all. That’s what many students face while school is in session.
But that hunger doesn’t stop during the summer months. In fact, keeping children healthy while school is out for summer break is now a focus among a growing population in the Jackson County School District.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer.
Two schools in Jackson County will be providing meals free of charge to local youth, starting next week.
“Learning doesn’t stop during the summer, so why should proper nutrition?” said Dr. Barry Amacker, superintendent of the Jackson County School District.
Right now, more than 50% of St. Martin and Vancleave students are eligible for free and reduced meals during the school year, which is why the school district is eager to sponsor this summer feeding program.
“During the summer months, many families worry about feeding their children,” said Ashley Harris, child nutrition director for JCSD. “So we are opening our doors to the public and serving hot, well-balanced meals that are student favorites!”
The cost is free for anyone age 18 and younger. And, adults may also eat at either location for $3 per meal – cash or check only.
The meals will be served beginning Monday, June 3, and running through July 26. The only closure will be July 5 to July 5. Harris notes that no income requirements or registration is required to enjoy the hot meals, which will be served at two locations in the school district:
In St. Martin, breakfast will be served at St. Martin High School (11300 Yellowjacket Drive, Ocean Springs, MS 39564) Monday through Friday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m.
And, Vancleave Middle School (Highway 57 North, 4725 Bulldog Lane, Vancleave, MS 39565) will serve breakfast Monday through Friday 7 to 8 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
