The Lantern Still Swings: The Legend of Stuckey’s Bridge

Some roads are best traveled in the daylight. And if the stories surrounding Stuckey’s Bridge in Lauderdale County are true, this might be one of them.

Tucked away near Enterprise, where the Chunky River winds through the countryside, stands a bridge with a past so sinister it has become one of Mississippi’s most chilling ghost stories.

And it all begins with a man named Old Man Stuckey.

According to local legend, sometime during the 1800s, Stuckey operated a small inn near the river. Travelers passing through the area could find a warm meal, a place to rest, and what appeared to be a friendly face after a long day on the road.

Unfortunately, some of those weary travelers reportedly never made it to breakfast.

As the story goes, Stuckey wasn’t exactly known for his Southern hospitality. He allegedly used a glowing lantern to attract unsuspecting travelers, particularly those carrying money or valuables. Once his guests had settled in for the night, he murdered them, stole their belongings, and buried their bodies along the riverbank.

Not exactly the kind of establishment you’d recommend to your out-of-town relatives.

Eventually, the townspeople supposedly caught on to his murderous activities. A local posse captured Stuckey and, according to the legend, hanged him from the very bridge that would eventually bear his name.

You might think that would have been the end of Old Man Stuckey.

    Apparently, nobody told him.

For generations, visitors have reported strange happenings around Stuckey’s Bridge. Some claim to have spotted a mysterious lantern swinging above the dark waters of the Chunky River, even when no one is there to carry it.

Others describe unexplained splashes, eerie noises, and the unsettling feeling that someone is watching from the shadows.

Perhaps the creepiest account involves a dark figure that supposedly appears hanging from the bridge, just as Stuckey allegedly did more than a century ago.

Of course, separating historical fact from Mississippi folklore is another matter entirely. The gruesome details of Stuckey’s crimes and his supposed execution belong largely to local legend, passed down through generations of storytellers.

But that’s part of what makes a good Mississippi ghost story, isn’t it?

A lonely stretch of road. A dark river. An old tale that refuses to be forgotten.

And somewhere out there, if the legends are to be believed, a lantern still swings in the darkness.

So, if you ever find yourself near Enterprise after sunset and spot a mysterious light hovering above the Chunky River, you might want to keep driving.

Because some invitations are better left unanswered.
