MOSS POINT—To advance to the Mississippi State Games, special Olympians must first qualify at the Track and Field events held at Jerry Alexander Stadium in Moss Point, a place where athletes become shining stars.

March 11, is the date for the 2026 Special Olympics Area 12 Track and Field Games in Moss Point where more than 90 contestants compete for the coveted awards offered. After a hiatus for several years, the event returned to the River City in 2024 and has seen continual growth in participation each year.

Donna Joseph, coordinator for the event and program and events coordinator for the City of Moss Point, said she reached out to organizers to bring the event back to Moss Point so that the recreational programs would be more well-rounded.

“I reached out to bring it back so that we, as a city, could do our part in making sure that we provide opportunities for all ages and all abilities,” Ms. Joseph said. “This event has led to the creation of a new program in Parks and Recreation called ‘Shining Stars’ which provides recreational activities for citizens with disabilities.”

The day-long event will begin with an athlete processional at 9 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies. The Olympic Track and Field Games begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. Ms. Joseph said excitement builds with each event, but one of the favorite activities of the Olympians is the Fan Festival that features fun activity stations and giveaways.

With just under two weeks until the event, Ms. Joseph said she is seeking sponsorships and volunteers so that the event will provide the best possible experience for all involved to include event t-shirts, colorful signage and other event needs. As a qualifier for the state games that will take place in May, she said the City of Moss Point hopes to provide a great opportunity for as many athletes as possible.

But, with all the planning, events, volunteers and excitement, Ms. Joseph said this is truly an event where everyone is a winner.

“Seeing the smiles on the faces of each participant, parent, teacher, volunteer, sponsor or spectator is my favorite part,” she said. “This is truly an event I hold near and dear to my heart, and there is no doubt it is one of the most special events hosted in the River City.”
