It’s peak summertime in Mississippi, and the last thing many of us want to do is spend time in the sweltering heat. That is, unless there will be water involved. On August 16th, 2025, Hattiesburg will be hosting the Rodney Richardson Water Run. Lace your running shoes up for a day full of fun and community.

This splash-filled 5K is unlike any other in the Pine Belt. Runners can expect a high-energy course filled with water stations, sprinklers, and good old-fashioned water balloon ambushes. Whether you’re a serious runner, or someone who just wants to stay cool while having fun, the Water Run offers a refreshing way to enjoy the Hub City outdoors without overheating.

Pro-tip— although there will be plenty of water to cool you down externally, it is crucial to hydrate before and after your run.

Get on your marks at the Town Square in Hattiesburg. Check-in and registration will start at 8:00 AM. Participants are encouraged to wear light clothing and bring a towel. There will be two races: a 5k run and the 1 Mile Fun Run. Registration for the 5k run is $45.00, and the 1 Mile Fun Run is $25.00. Registration information can be found here.

The Rodney Richardson Water Run doesn’t just bring out the best runners and water balloon thrower extraordinaires— it brings people together for a purpose that goes far beyond fun in the sun. Proceeds from the run will go to Ddembe Ministries—an orphan, widow, and family care ministry located in Jinja, Uganda.

There will be music, food trucks, and the splash of all splashes, from the Hattiesburg Fire Department, set up near the finish line. Not a runner? That’s okay. Plan to cheer the runners on and soak up the fun. Whether you’re racing toward the finish line or helping keep the runners cool with water balloons, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience.

Have you attended the Rodney Richardson Water Run before? If so, share your tips in the comment section of Our Mississippi Home’s Facebook page.
