Warm Up With a Good Book

Don’t let me lie! I have not had a good attitude about this crazy artic weather we are having here in Mississippi. It is downright ridiculous and somehow altogether wrong to have snow on our beaches. I mean, seriously, it was 25 degrees warmer in Alaska this week than it was here at home.

Now, don’t get me started! I know the kids loved it. I did too, for a moment. And yes, I made several batches of snow cream for the neighborhood kids, one of whom lost big points in my book when he snurled his nose and asked, “What in the world is this?”

The retired classroom teacher in me only let that rude irreverence go because his buddy grabbed the offered bowl with a squeal of delight and yelled, “Yes! Snow cream,” as he ran into his house for a spoon.

But after snow cream, sledding, and the creation of a snowman or two, even the most raucous kid was ready to head inside and get warm. Me included! It is just TOO cold for Mississippians.

So, if you are currently like me, and the indoor boredom has settled in right beside these frigid temperatures, then my go-to solution is and always will be a good, good book. Nothing beats back boredom like reading.

And as Oscar Wilde once said, “It’s what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.”

I just can’t help but read. Honestly, if I have one besetting sin, it is reading too much. But then again, is there such a thing as too much reading?

    I think not!

Now, as you know, Mississippi has birthed some of the world’s most prolific writers. But let me mention a few authors from the northern half of the state, some of whom may be totally new to you. Even so, their books might provide the perfect way to stay warm and cozy during this artic blast.

Simply go online to check out these Mississippi authors and their works:

    Parrish Alford,

    Sara W. Berry,

     Karl Bullock,

    Patricia Neely Dorsey,

    R. F. Sanderford,

    Whtiney White.

Feel free to comment and share the names of other Mississippi authors who might be unknown to the rest of us.

After all, books make the best gifts of all.
