7 Ways to Celebrate Mardi Gras During the Time of Covid

Well, the pandemic has put quite the damper on many things over the past year. If you’re looking forward to celebrating Mardi Gras, it may be best to celebrate at your home. It looks like, in terms of Gulf Coast celebrations, all parades have been canceled (see Parade Schedule). However, there are some fun things you can still do to celebrate while keeping yourself healthy and safe!

Safe Ways to Celebrate Mardi Gras

    1. Yardi-Gras

The Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum and Gulf Coast Carnival Association have developed what they call “Mardi Yardi.” They would like for people to decorate their porches and homes for Mardi Gras. They are also offering what they call the “Laissez Bon Temp to Geaux box.” It contains everything you need to celebrate Mardi Gras, including a king cake and decorations for your home. These boxes cost $100, and the winner of the decorating contest will be announced on the day before Fat Tuesday.

2.Celebrate at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is located at 246 Dolan Ave, Gulfport, MS 39507. The celebration will occur from February 15-16, 2021 from 10 am-5 pm. There will be Mardi Gras themed activities such as mask making, and kids get a goody bag full of beads. Also, on Feb 15 from 10:30 am-12 pm, there will be an opportunity to paint your own Mardi Gras canvas. This activity is great for kids ages 6 and up.

    3. Create shoe-box floats

You only need a shoebox, construction paper, Mardi Gras beads, figurines for the riders, and some hot glue. Use your imagination and create an awesome float! You can have a contest for the best float!

    4. Have a virtual costume party

Dress in your best Mardi-Gras costumes, and have a virtual party with friends and family. Then, vote for the winner of the best costume!

    5. Watch virtual Mardi-Gras Celebrations

Nola.com is hosting “Mardi Gras for All Y’all.” You can get more information about the event here. It’s a 3-day event that features iconic artists, chefs, and personalities at some awesome New Orleans venues such as Mardi Gras World and Antoine’s.

    6. Bake a King Cake and Watch Mardi Gras themed movies

If you aren’t sure how to bake a king cake, here’s a recipe for you: Mardi Gras King Cake Recipe from All Recipes. While you are at it, enjoy a Mardi Gras themed movie. If you need ideas, check these out: Mardi Gras Themed Movies.

    7. Order Themed Takeout

Think about ordering New Orleans themed dishes such as po’boys, fried seafood, shrimp creole, and jambalaya. Also, don’t forget the beignets!

Final Thoughts on Mardi-Gras Celebrations During the time of Covid

As always, use your judgment and avoid large crowds. Wear a mask and socially distance yourselves if you do go out. These are some ideas that you could potentially do at home and stay safe! I hope you enjoy your Mardi Gras Celebrations!
