Garden Park Offering New, Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Option

Anterior-approach total hip replacement spares muscle to improve outcomes, recovery time

It’s not “hip” to live with joint pain. That’s why Garden Park Medical Center recently invested in technology that allows physicians to offer a new, anterior-approach hip replacement surgery, a minimally invasive, muscle-sparing procedure that uses an alternative approach to traditional hip replacement.

Garden Park is the first hospital in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region to offer this hip replacement option.

The Hana® Surgery Table allows orthopedic surgeons to position patients so they can replace the hip joint through a single incision in front of the hip, without cutting any muscles. This often leads to improved outcomes for patients, as traditional hip replacement surgeries require major muscles to be cut to access the hip joint, said Dr. Philip Myers, an orthopedic surgeon at Garden Park.

“This is a growing trend in hip replacement as it helps a lot of patients get up and moving after surgery much faster by keeping those muscles intact,” Myers said. “Research has shown that the anterior approach lowers the risk of hip dislocation after surgery, and it typically decreases the amount of time patients spend in rehabilitation.”

Other benefits of the new, minimally invasive approach include smaller incision, less pain and blood loss, shorter surgical time, less scarring and less post-operative restrictions, Myers said.

“Our physicians and staff have worked hard to build our reputation for quality orthopedic care, and we want to ensure we equip them with the latest technologies to continue to grow our program,” said Randy Rogers, Garden Park CEO. “We are thrilled to offer this innovative service to our community.”

Garden Park was recently the first hospital in Mississippi to earn the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification, reflecting the organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. Garden Park has also been recognized in recent years by Healthgrades as a 5-star hospital for both hip and knee replacement.
