Gulf Blue Navigator has been recognized by TIME and Statista as one of America’s Best Incubators & Accelerators 2026, placing the Mississippi-based program among the nation’s top-performing startup support organizations.

The inaugural recognition identifies leading incubators and accelerators across the United States based on alumni evaluations, peer recommendations, track records and measurable founder outcomes.

Operated through The University of Southern Mississippi Research Foundation, Gulf Blue Navigator is a late-stage accelerator supporting companies developing technologies across the Blue Economy, including maritime systems, aquaculture, coastal resilience, ocean observation, autonomous technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Natalie Guess, assistant director of innovation and impact at Southern Miss, said the recognition reinforces Mississippi’s growing innovation ecosystem and its national reach.

“Being recognized by TIME and Statista as one of America’s best incubators and accelerators is an incredible honor and a meaningful validation of the work our team, partners, mentors and companies have built together. Gulf Blue Navigator was created to provide more than traditional accelerator programming. We connect companies with customers, research expertise, testing and demonstration capabilities, investors, manufacturers, government partners and the resources needed to move technologies from discovery to commercialization and deployment,” said Guess.

The recognition was based on three primary components: Alumni Evaluations Analysis, which considered overall recommendations and six additional evaluation criteria; Track Record Analysis, which assessed information about leading companies that participated in each organization’s programs; and Expert Recommendation Analysis, which was based on recommendations from startup investors and experienced entrepreneurs.

Jamie Miller, president and CEO of the Gulf Coast Business Council (GCBC), has supported Gulf Blue Navigator and its role along the Mississippi coast. The GCBC recognized Gulf Blue Navigator with the Rising Tide Award during the 2026 State of the Coast Symposium in May.

“Gulf Blue Navigator’s recognition by TIME as one of the Top 100 accelerators is a tremendous validation of the innovative ecosystem being built here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. By connecting entrepreneurs with world-class research, industry expertise, federal partners and resources to scale, Gulf Blue is not only advancing the Blue Economy, it is positioning coastal Mississippi as a nationally recognized destination for innovation and technology-driven economic growth. This recognition demonstrates the impact of the program and the strength of the partnerships behind it, and we are excited to see that impact continue to grow,” said Miller.

Since its launch, Gulf Blue Navigator has supported companies from across the United States and internationally while strengthening Mississippi’s position as a hub for Blue Economy innovation. Participating companies receive commercialization support, strategic mentoring, customer and partner introductions, access to research and testing facilities, workspace, national visibility and opportunities to engage with industry, government, academia, investors and end users.

“This recognition reflects the power of Mississippi’s Blue Economy ecosystem and the partnerships that make it possible,” said Joseph Graben, director of strategic partnerships at Southern Miss. “By bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers, industry, investors, economic development organizations and government partners, we are accelerating innovation, helping companies commercialize breakthrough technologies, attracting investment, creating high-quality jobs and delivering solutions that strengthen our economy, protect our environment and enhance national security.”

Gulf Blue Navigator is the flagship maritime acceleration program within the northern Gulf Coast region, connecting innovation-driven small businesses with research institutions, mission partners, manufacturers, investors, workforce organizations and economic development resources. The program also hosts Gulf Blue Demo Day, Innovation Week, technology demonstrations, strategic networking events and other initiatives designed to advance commercialization and strengthen collaboration throughout the region.

“This award belongs to every company, mentor, partner, sponsor and supporter who has helped make Gulf Blue Navigator successful,” Guess added. “We are proud of what has been accomplished, but we are even more excited about what comes next.”

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is a comprehensive public research institution delivering transformative programs on campuses in Hattiesburg and Long Beach, at teaching and research sites in central and southern Mississippi, as well as online. Founded in 1910, USM is one of only 130 universities in the nation to earn the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education’s "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” designation, and its robust research enterprise includes experts in ocean science and engineering, polymer science and engineering, and sport venue safety and security, among others. USM is also one of only 40 institutions in the nation accredited in theatre, art and design, dance and music. As an economic driver, USM generates an annual economic impact of more than $600 million across the state. USM welcomes a diverse student body of approximately 15,000, representing 71 countries, all 50 states, and every county in Mississippi. USM students have collected four Truman Scholarships and 36 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, while also leading Mississippi with 24 Goldwater Scholarships, an honor that recognizes the next generation of great research scientists. Home to the Golden Eagles, USM competes in 17 Division I sports sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For more information, visit usm.edu.
