Mississippi has one of the lowest rates of homelessness in the United States. However, our state isn’t without its challenges, like increased homelessness in Jackson and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, with both areas reporting rising numbers. There are many reasons why someone may find themselves without housing, and finding a solution can often feel overwhelming. But helping people experiencing homelessness doesn’t have to be hopeless, especially during the winter months.

When the weather turns cold, it’s essential to support people without housing by donating warm clothing, such as jackets, gloves, and socks, providing hot food and drinks, and contributing to local shelters and warming centers through monetary donations or volunteer time.

You can also create drives for winter coats and winter care packages, which include essentials such as hand warmers and non-perishable snacks, or volunteer directly with outreach teams and shelters.

Winter coat drives are an easy and effective way to utilize gently used coats. You can encourage people in your circle, church, or workplace to look in their closets and donate gently used coats of all sizes to a local organization that distributes them.

Mississippi has well-established organizations with boots on the ground, preparing to help our neighbors without housing this winter. Connecting with one in your area ensures you can help meet the unique demands facing individuals in your community.

Mississippi Balance of State CoC is a statewide network that coordinates the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, which provides outreach, shelter, rapid re-housing, and prevention services for individuals in rural Mississippi who are facing homelessness.

Shower Power serves Central, Mississippi, and is more than just a shower; they aim to bring hospitality to the streets by providing hygiene services to individuals experiencing homelessness.  Every winter, they hold coats, clothing, and sleeping bag drives before the onset of frigid weather.

Jesus in the Streets Ministry, located in Fulton, Mississippi, collects travel-size hygiene products to create care kits for the homeless and nursing homes.

Open Doors Homeless Coalition serves Harrison, Jackson, Hancock, Stone, George, and Pearl River counties by providing rental assistance, case management, and linkages to other community services to prevent and respond to homelessness.

Homeless Help Alliance – Coastal MS supports the homeless community through outreach, support, and advocacy in the Ocean Springs area.

Don’t forget about The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, which have chapters throughout the state that have well-established track records of serving those in need, including the homeless year-round.

To find a reputable nonprofit, research its mission, impact, and finances using resources such as Charity Navigator and GuideStar. Look for transparency on their website by checking for an annual report, staff and board information, and financial documents, such as the Form 990. Finally, read reviews, check for recent news coverage, and assess whether the organization’s work and values align with your own.
