Journey back in time and experience the past like never before at Landrum’s Homestead and Village in Laurel on May 20, 2023. Landrum’s Homestead will be hosting its first-ever “History…Alive!” event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday.
History will truly come to life as visitors and guests get to travel back in time and take a glimpse into what life was like on turn-of-the-century homesteads. Guests will get to see blacksmiths, wood carvers, quilters, and broom makers in action as they demonstrate their skills and crafts. There will also be plenty of antique engines and tools on display for guests to get the opportunity to see how different life was for their grandparents and great-grandparents, giving a deeper view into their methods of work and travel.
“History and education have always been important to the Landrum family, and the main premise of Landrum’s Homestead and Village has been to honor the lives and work of their ancestors and a special way to keep history alive for generations to come,” Kat Romero, Landrum’s marketing assistant, said. “That was truly reason for the foundation of the homestead so that their children, grandchildren, and future generations could really appreciate the work and dedication of their prior generations. Landrum’s has always been a very exciting way to keep history alive and make learning about it fun for so many people.”
Essentially, Landrum’s Homestead and Village is a vibrant history book that comes to life and gives guests a chance to experience how life truly was in the past, giving guests a greater appreciation for the struggles and devotion that their ancestors endured making a better life for their families. History…Alive! will be an immersive event in that lifestyle. Guests will be treated to old-fashioned music styles brought to stunning life by the beautiful artistry of the Southern Strings Dulcimers. Cloggers will also be on hand to charm the crowds with their talented displays of dance.
While guests are exploring the ways of life of past generations, there will also be demonstrations of how food was prepared and cooked in the past. Guests will get the chance to see how butter was churned by hand years ago. There will be demonstrations of how fresh corn was ground at the grist mill in preparations for cornmeal. The air will be filled with the delicious aroma of homemade biscuits as there will be demonstrations of how this delicacy was prepared by loving hands so many years ago, and guests will be thrilled as they get the chance to taste these savory delights.
“Getting a chance to taste those yummy biscuits is really enough reason to entice anyone to come,” Romero said with a laugh. “But there will also be homemade ice cream, barbeque, burgers, fried fish, and so many delicious foods that you can buy, and the whole family can enjoy a picnic together while exploring all of these wonderful exhibits. It’s a fabulous way for the family to experience history in a fun way, and it will make a great outing for everyone.”
Guests will also get a view into life on the battlefield as there will be reenactments of Confederate encampments on the grounds, giving a glimpse into the struggles and strife that so many young men endured during the Civil War. There will be wagon rides to take guests on an enchanting tour of the beautiful grounds and landscape of Landrum’s Homestead and Village. There will also be opportunities for guests to tour the antique buildings at the village, and the little ones will have fun as they get to pan for gold and gems at the mining station.
“This is truly a one-of-a-kind event that offers something for everyone in the family to enjoy,” Romero said. “We’re so fortunate to have such a beautiful place for everyone to experience, and it’s such a great way to help us all keep history alive.
