One of the state’s most prominent fall festivals returns to Fulmer’s Farmstead in Beaumont this weekend.

The Mississippi Pecan Festival, in its 34th year, has something for everyone to enjoy. From Sept. 23-25, festival goers will be treated to plenty of pecans, pecan-baked goodies, live music, and arts and crafts.

“It started as an arts and crafts show,” Jeannette Fulmer, the festival’s founder, said. “Actually, it just started in the front yard as a glorified yard sale with only 150 in attendance. From there, it just kept building, and it became something more like a festival and took on a country fair atmosphere.”

Since those humble beginnings in the front yard, the festival has grown into a three-day party full of food vendors, local artisans, and more. You can’t go to the Mississippi Pecan Festival without trying some of the amazing food such as homemade bread, pecan pieces, muscadine and mayhaw jelly, ooey gooey cakes, fried blooming onions, and kettle corn.

While at the festival, don’t forget to stop by the general store! Fulmer’s General Store and Farmstead is known for its bulk foods and extensive variety of organic foods. Everything sold at Fulmer’s is all-natural.

“I think it’s just a better way to live,” Fulmer said. “So many preservatives in foods are just not good for you. We think this is a healthier way to eat and live.”

The Mississippi Pecan Festival features something for all ages, including pony rides, wagon rides, and demonstrations of old-fashioned wood carving, soap making, basket weaving, and butter churning.

“For the younger kids, we wanted to make it like an experience to their grandpa’s farm, but for the older guys, it’s almost like a step back in time,” Fulmer said.
