Three talented individuals in the Singing River Electric family are doing what they can to support our local medical community. SRE retiree Carole Merritt, Grace Allgood, daughter of SRE foreman Gary Allgood, and SRE accounts payable clerk Nikki Stork are making masks and donating them to area hospitals.

“My granddaughter works at Forrest General Hospital on the floor with Coronavirus patients, and they don’t have enough masks to go around,” said Merritt. “It breaks my heart to know they’re on the front lines and having to deal with these shortages.”

Merritt is sending her masks to Greene County Hospital and Forrest General Hospital and is also giving them to friends who work at other area hospitals and who have compromised immune systems but still must be in the public.

With a daughter, granddaughter and other close family members and friends working as nurses, Merritt has a tender spot for them.

Grace Allgood displays some of her masks before donating them to Singing River Health System.

Grace Allgood loves to sew and is happy to help in this time of need. Since she couldn’t find elastic, her design is like a surgical mask that ties in the back. Her masks are going to Singing River Health System and its Regional Cancer Center.

Stork is busy with work, school and her family but still finds time to sew a few masks. Stork’s mother works at the VA Hospital in Biloxi, so she of course sent a supply for her mother and her co-workers. She also gives masks to individuals who express a need on Facebook, contacting them one at a time to make the offer.

Thank you to Carole, Grace and Nikki for bringing happiness and hope to our local communities and sharing the co-op spirit!
