Join the City of Moss Point and its many partners for the Grand Opening of Sawmill Landing Park – a unique nature-based green space.
What: Grand Opening of Sawmill Landing Park
Where: Sawmill Landing Park – 4231 Dantzler St, Moss Point, MS 39563
When: Saturday, December 7th (10:00 am till Noon)
This event celebrates the completion of the park, included as part of the annual Christmas by the River celebration. The park opening kicks off the set of events that run from 10:00 am (this event) through the Christmas Parade (2:00 pm), River Park Festival (12:00–6:00 pm) and Boat Parade and Fireworks (6:00 pm).
The Schedule for this event is:
10:00 a.m. – Opening comments to include recognition of the many individuals and groups that have contributed to the development of the park.
10:30 a.m. – Noon – A series of hands-on activities that promote visitation across all elements of the park, to include:
- • Challenge to all participants to visit interpretive signage across the site to learn about the natural and cultural elements of the park, and green structures that make the park an example of environmentally friendly design.
- • Demonstration of a crosscut saw used to fell trees before modern saws (BSA Troop 229)
- • Cultural History Photo and Artifact display, including those associated with the historic businesses that were located on this site, and elements of the local lumber and shipbuilding industries that were found here.
- • Nature-based interpretive stations across the site where Naturalists will point out key elements of the park and their significance to cultural history.
By design, this park celebrates the Natural and Cultural History of Moss Point, as an important early Gulf Coast shipbuilding and wood products port – that served the globe. Native plant diversity is being restored to include examples of the trees that were used in shipbuilding and those important to the lumber and naval stores industries of the 19th and 20th centuries.
“Moss Point is excited about the completion of this public greenspace, located at an important gateway to the River City. The opening of the park will celebrate and honor the many individuals and community groups that contributed to its development and who will visit and use this park for years to come.” Mayor Billy Knight, Sr.
“This new park adds great value to the City of Moss Point’s renewed emphasis on supporting and expanding recreational opportunities across the city. Outdoor recreation is a critical element of our efforts.” Donna Joseph, Director, Moss Point Department of Parks and Recreation.
Parking available at the Pallet Mill River Front Facility and along Dantzler Street.
