Semyra Reus has been named George County’s Distinguished Young Woman.

Reus, a junior at George County High School, will compete in the annual Mississippi DYW program at Meridian in July. She is the daughter of Amber Blange Reus and Jonathan Adam Reus of Lucedale. After high school, she plans to study marine biology at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Reus was awarded the prestigious title at the March 12 program sponsored by the Lucedale Fine Arts Club. Co-chairmen for the program were Audra Rouse and Marla Howell. Participants won thousands of dollars in college scholarships.

Other winners at the George County program were first alternate Bella Price and second alternate Hope Welford. Price is the daughter of Purvis Lamar and Patricia Vianne Price. She plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and study robotics engineering. Welford is the daughter of Deborah Lewis Welford and Franklin Boyd Welford. She plans to major in interior design at Mississippi State University.

Other awards included Spirit Scholarship Award to Ariel Faulkner, Jackie Valentine Memorial Scholarship to Dayleigh Howell, Scholastic Scholarship Award to Semyra Reus, June Burge Memorial Scholarship Award for Self-Expression to Bella Price, Talent Scholarship Award to Haelyn Caskie, Fitness Scholarship Award to Haelyn Caskie, Carolyn Cowart Elsteroth Memorial Award for Excellence to Haelyn Caskie and Be Your Best Self Essay Scholarship Award to Dayleigh Howell.

Outgoing DYW title holder Lindee Wilson presented the medallion to Reus.
