Region play in prep baseball circles in the ‘southern Six” is a mixed bag of sorts.
After all, in Class 4A, Region 8-4A action is already underway after beginning last week while most teams in the “Southern Six” were participating in the annual Battle at the Beach.
In Region 4A, the five teams that comprise that league will play a home-and-home series with another region foe over the next five weeks to complete its eight-game region schedule. One team in the mix will play an out-of-conference foe each week as well over that five-week span.
Region 8-4A is comprised of Moss Point, Pass Christian, Bay High, Stone and Greene County.
Last week, in the first week of play, Pass Christian swept two games from Moss Point and Stone and Bay split a pair of contests.
The Pirates beat MPHS 10-0 on Tuesday, as Southern Miss signee and PCHS ace pitcher Peyton Lacey moved to a perfect 5-0 on the hill with the win in a dominant complete game one-hitter performance striking out 16 Tigers in the process.
Brendan Necaise led the Pirtes at the plate with three hits, while Necaise, Lacy, LJ Jaynes and Quinton Emerick each collected a double and Dylan Welter added a triple to the winning attack.
Pass Christian followed that win up with a 6-1 victory over the Tigers on Thursday to move to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Meanwhile, in Class 5A, Region 7-5A begins play this week with home and home series just as Region 8-4A is doing. That region is made up of Picayune, Pearl River Central, West Harrison and Long Beach.
However, Region 8-5A won’t begin league play until next week. Also, despite being in the same classification, the two Class 5A regions in the “Southern Six’ will compete in different schedule structures this season.
In Region 7-5A, the four teams that comprise that league will play a home-and-home series over the next three weeks and then come back in the last two weeks of the regular season and face one another one more time each to complete a nine-game league schedule.
However, in Region 8-5A, the four teams in that league will face the same opponent three times in the same week on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday to finish with a nine-game region slate as well. George Couty, Vancleave, East Central and Gautier round out that region.

In Class 6A, both Region 8-6A and Region 7-6A will follow the same pattern as Region 8-5A wherein each team plays three region games in the same week against the same opponent to complete. nine-game region schedule.
Region 8-6A is comprised of Gulfport, Biloxi, Hancock and Harrison central, while Region 7-6A consists of Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, St. Martin and D’Iberville.
