Mississippi is home to some up-and-coming artists.

These young people may one day have their paintings, drawings, and sculptures displayed alongside the works of Walter Anderson, George Ohr, Richmond Barthe, Marie Hull, and other of our state’s most renowned artists.

But for now, Mississippians can catch a glimpse of some of Mississippi’s budding artists in the 2025 Scholastic Art Awards exhibit, presented by Atmos Energy at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

This elite student exhibition will be on display from February 8 through May 4 in the Public Corridor of the museum, located at 380 South Lamar Street in Jackson, Mississippi.

Presented in conjunction with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has helped identify and celebrate the work of our nation’s exceptionally talented young artists and writers for more than a century.

This year, 427 Mississippi students participated in this iconic program, with their art judged by a blind panel of professional artists and leaders who examined the originality, technical skill, and emerging vision of each young artist’s work.

The judges also looked for art demonstrating the student’s creativity, innovation, and storytelling abilities. With over 1,100 pieces of artwork from a diverse range of mediums submitted for this year’s program, judging was not an easy task.

Consequently, the Mississippi Museum of Art is proud to present a large portion of the winning works from students throughout the state. On its official Facebook page, the museum recently highlighted a few of these Gold Key pieces of student artwork.

Go online to facebook.com/msmuseumart to preview the work of Carolyn George, a junior from Jackson Preparatory School, as well as three students from Ida B. Wells Academic and Performing Arts Complex: Destynee Younger, also a junior, as well as Alexis Gypson and Simms Powell, both 8th graders.

Then, make plans to go and enjoy the entire 2025 Scholastic Art Awards display in the public Corridor of the Mississippi Museum of Art.

Please keep in mind that this particular student art exhibit is free to view, but entry to other museum exhibits will require purchase of a ticket.
