On Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport will host the second annual “Beach Day at the Wheel Way” at the Long Beach Harbor. This free event brings the community together to support children with disabilities and their families. Attendees will enjoy activities the whole family can enjoy, live entertainment and light refreshments, all provided by support from local businesses.
The Wheel Way, a wheelchair ramp leading directly onto the beach on the west side of the Long Beach Harbor, is the first of its kind in Mississippi. Built in 2018 and funded by the Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport, the Wheel Way provides individuals with disabilities direct access to the beach in a safe and comfortable way.
“When I saw an individual put his feet in the sand for the very first time, I was touched by the effect the Wheel Way had on him and wanted to make sure as many people as possible knew about it,” said Selena Rogers, Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport member and event chair. “That’s when we decided to start Beach Day at the Wheel Way – we wanted it to bring awareness to the ramp and also bring people together.”
In celebration of National Disabilities Awareness Month, in partnership with USM Gulf Park’s Institute for Disability Studies and the City of Long Beach, individuals with special needs and their families are invited to participate in the free event. The event is located between Steve’s Marina and Simpson Pier on the west side of the Long Beach Harbor. Nearby parking is available.
