[Gulfport, MS]: The Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce the 2022-2023 season, which ties the classical sounds of Beethoven to the rock of the Beatles. Under the guidance of Maestro Dr. Peter Rubardt, the symphony will perform opening night’s performance on October 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The pieces that will be performed are:

Hungarian March by Berlioz

Double Concerto by Brahms

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas

The Firebird Suite by Stravinsky

A virtuoso string soloist in front of a full orchestra is always a thrilling event, and the great German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms was a master of this.  Late in his career he set out to take the concerto form to an entirely new level: his double concerto is for a solo violinist and a solo cellist.  The riveting performance will feature, Violinist Geneva Lewis and Cellist Gabriel Martins. The two soloists toss brilliant passages back and forth, team up for gorgeous lyrical melodies, and carry on a beguiling dialog with each other.  The result is an astonishing masterpiece that combines the power of Brahms’ symphonies with the intimacy of chamber music.

“Once again Dr. Rubardt has found two bright, shining stars on the rise!  Next season, we would not be able to get Geneva or Gabriel, as they are so in demand now,” says Stacy Pair, executive director at Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra. “They will perform the Brahms Double Concerto!  This will be the first time they have performed the Double Concerto together.  I can’t wait to see the sparks fly!”

The GCSO will shine in the second half of the show with a pair of splashy pieces that each tell a story. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is well known to anybody who grew up on Disney’s Fantasia and remembers the brooms that fetched water. The night will end with the stirring finale to Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet.

Opening night’s performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on October 15, 2022, at iMPAC on MGCCC Harrison County’s campus.  To learn more about Opening Night or to buy season tickets, visit the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra’s website at gulfcoastsymphony.net or call 228-896-4276.
