My name is Katelyn Winstead, and I am excited to say that I am one of the newest student writers for Our MS Home! This story is a little bit about myself and why I am so keen about this opportunity to write for Our MS Home.

A Gulf Coast native, I was born in Pascagoula and raised in Ocean Springs. After graduating from Ocean Springs High School, I decided to attend MGCCC (fight the community college stigma!) and enrolled in the Honors College program.

I am a business major with intent to transfer to the University of Mississippi and go to law school. On campus, I am a representative for the Student Government Association, a regional and chapter officer for our two-year national honors society, Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of the Circle K service club. Outside of school, I am a supervisor at Coffee Fusion Bubble Tea Café in Ocean Springs and a fall intern for Congressman Stephen Palazzo’s Gulfport office.

Despite my major in business, I have always been an avid lover of reading and writing. As a child, I would read books while other kids my age were playing video games or dress-up. In high school, I wrote journal entries and short stories to relieve stress. Throughout the years, my love for reading and writing has not waivered. Many of my professors at MGCCC have encouraged me to continue to write, so, here I am!

As I navigate my final year at MGCCC, I hope to capture the people, places, and numerous qualities that make the Gulf Coast so special to those that experience it. Not only am I eager to write about the interesting things happening in the community, I am also ready to learn more about the people that make up the Coast and to hear their stories.

I am so grateful for the chance to expand my writing style and reach a new audience of readers. I cannot wait to bring a student’s perspective to Our MS Home and celebrate all of the amazing things happening in and around the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
