Valentine’s Day is coming quickly, so how do you celebrate the holiday as a family? Do you have any specific traditions or activities that you do together? I have a relatively new family, so I have grappled with the question of how to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my husband and my 4-year-old. My husband and I can always go on a date, but I’d also like to spend time together as a family. Thus, I have come up with a list of fun activities to do that everyone can enjoy as a family!

Fun Valentine’s Day activities to do as a family

1. Valentine’s Day crafts

If you have younger kids, you might enjoy doing some crafts together. If you need ideas, check out 10 Valentine’s Day Crafts for Young Kids. You can make a heart wreath, a fingerprint heart card, as well as a Valentine’s heart necklace. There is also Valentine’s Day sponge art, which is something I would definitely enjoy doing no matter how old I am!

2.Get dressed up and go to a fancy restaurant or a not so fancy restaurant.

Get everyone to wear their nicest clothes and do their hair, and go out for a fun evening at a restaurant. You can go to someplace simple such as Texas Roadhouse or any fancy restaurant that you have in your town.

3.Cook a nice meal at home and enjoy a movie together.

Ask everyone what they would like for dinner and pick a movie to watch as a family. If you need ideas on what movies to watch, check these out: Valentine’s Day Movies for Kids/Family.

4.Play a fun game together

For ideas, check these out: 7 Awesome Games for Family Gatherings. These games include Cards Against Humanity, Clue, Monopoly, among others.

5.Spread love and kindness to others

This can involve many things such as sending homemade valentines to nursing home residents or even volunteering at a local animal shelter. Discuss this together as a family what you would like to do and get out there and make the world a better place.

6.Go around the table and say one thing you appreciate or love about each family member

For example, you can tell your kids what you love about them and then they can say what they love about their own siblings and parents. This may involve even reading letters to each other. It’s however you choose to express your love!

7.Go to your local zoo

There’s just something about going to the zoo as a family that I have always enjoyed. We spend an enjoyable time together watching and learning about the different animals. If you are in Hattiesburg, MS, take a visit to the zoo there. We love it!

8. Exchange Valentine’s Day cards and gifts

This can involve store-bought or homemade cards/gifts. Write letters and notes within the cards and express what you love about that person.

Final Thoughts on Fun Valentine’s Day Activities for Families

I think the most important thing about spending Valentine’s Day together as a family is finding what you, as a family, enjoy doing and focusing on bonding and connecting. It’s about expressing your love and what you appreciate about each family member. Thus, I hope these ideas help you better connect to each other!

I am married, and I also have a 4-year-old daughter. I earned my Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi, and I have been teaching psychology classes over the past 10 years. As a professor and as a parent, I grew to love learning anything about child development. I recently turned that into a passion for helping other parents by starting my own blog at http://www.nurturingtamra.com.
