Contrary to popular belief, you don’t necessarily have to leave the state for a nice getaway. Mississippi is packed with treasures of places you can visit for your winter weekend away. Whether you enjoy a more traditional holiday getaway with Christmas celebrations galore or a less traditional Christmas with hiking and outdoor adventures, you’ll be sure to find at least one place that’ll be fit for you to enjoy this winter. Keep reading to see what those are.

Oxford

You should have known this city would make the list. Besides being the city that holds one of the state’s most popular universities, Oxford is the most perfect tourist town. You can spend the entire day on The Square, starting with your breakfast, doing some shopping, grabbing frozen yogurt at Yaya’s, and topping the day off with dinner at Julep’s. The Graduate is also a great place to stay, which is right on the corner of The Square!

Bay St. Louis

Calling all of my coastal enthusiasts. Bay St. Louis is a quiet, quaint town located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. If you’re in search of slightly warmer weather than the rest of the state, you’ll want to plan your getaway here!

Natchez

With its reigning title as one of the state’s oldest cities, Natchez is a phenomenal place to go if you are looking to celebrate the holidays with an emphasis on history. Their month-long “Christmas in Natchez” celebration is still going strong and will be celebrated nightly until Christmas Day. Start by taking your children to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, view the beautiful displays, and finish the night with some delicious food. And don’t forget to check out all the antebellum homes!

Madison

Although Madison has ended their annual “Richardson Light Show” effective this year, this is still a fantastic city to visit for your winter getaway. Located right outside Jackson, this suburb has consistently reigned as one of the best places to live in Mississippi. A city with this title is definitely worth visiting for your winter getaway!

Greenville

Located on the Mississippi-Arkansas state border, right in the Mississippi Delta, this city is perfect for a winter getaway for hikers. It is home to the Greenville Cypress Preserve Trust, which is a gem of nature. Get your hiking gear ready for a pleasant day of hiking on this modest 16-acre property. Although it is small in size, it makes up for it with its mesmerizing views.

Hollandale

You may not hear much about this city, but you’ll want to consider it for your winter trip. Located in Washington County, it holds the Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge. If you’re a bird watcher (or if you’re interested in starting), this location is the perfect spot to do so.

Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg is one of the state’s largest cities. From its abundance of museums to the zoo and the many coffee shops, Hattiesburg has something for everyone to enjoy this winter.

Wrapping Up

Taking a trip doesn’t have to involve boarding an airplane and leaving the state. Mississippi has plenty of options to venture into and experience. Are you interested in a winter getaway?
