If you’re looking to escape the heat this summer while also learning a thing or two, visit your local branch of the Jackson-George Regional Library System to check out and register for the summer reading program. Programs at all locations begin this week for all ages, and this year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” will encourage all readers to realize the fun of reading.

The library programs are free and designed to help kids discover the pleasure of reading throughout the summer months. Beyond that, the theme is planned each year to encourage children, as well as teens and adults, to participate in the space-themed events, programs, local artist presentations, and showcase the fun of reading.

Programs begin this week for all ages groups: preschool, elementary, teens and adults. Days and times for these vary by location, but there is at least one program each week per age group represented. You can find a detailed schedule here at www.jgrls.org.

The annual library themes come from a national summer library program partner – the Collaborative Summer Library Program – that creates a theme with information and manuals to help guide the local staff through the summer reading programs, according to Rex Bridges, public relations & marketing manager for the Jackson-George Regional Library System. The Collaborative Summer Library Program is a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens, and adults at the lowest cost possible for the public libraries.

The space theme will be featured in most of the new events, activities and crafts for all of the age groups this year.

Each year, the Jackson-George Regional Library System serves somewhere between 2,200 to 2,800 students in the summer elementary programs alone.

“We always have new families moving to our area, so we encourage them to get a library card, read books, and participate in exciting learning activities,” said Bethany Carlisle, Jackson-George Regional Library System youth services coordinator. “Everyone can get into our free programs and have fun! We hope kids and their parents will come and enjoy all the great programs,”

Registration for the summer program began last week and will continue until July 5. Readers can register at their home branch at the checkout/check-in desk at the library.

You can find the full summer and regular schedule for library programming as well as all of their locations at their website. You can also follow the Jackson-George Regional Library System on Facebook for future updates.
