Diavian Cooper is graduating from Moss Point High School this week still riding high on a major win for the girls Powerlifting Team. As team captain, Cooper helped lead her team in April to its third state championship in a row.

“It’s a great honor to be the only team in the school right now that has a state championship,” Cooper said. But Cooper doesn’t just lift big; she studies hard.

She’s attending Tougaloo College in the fall on a full-ride academic scholarship with plans to major in biology and minor in pre-med. Her goal is to open her own practice as a neurologist.

This week, she will walk across the Tiger Stadium field at graduation as either valedictorian or salutatorian of her class. She credits her academic success in part to her teachers for challenging her and keeping expectations high in the classroom.

“They pushed me really hard,” Cooper said. “The classes are not easy at all.”

The 2018 class as a whole received $7 million in scholarship offers, beating last year’s class by more than $1 million. Cooper said she is responsible for $1.5 million of those dollars, which includes full-ride scholarship offers from 11 schools.

Cooper said the class of 2018 couldn’t have achieved everything it has, academically and athletically, without the support of all the staff at the Moss Point High.

“They are very influential, and it’s clear to see they love all the students in the school,” Cooper said. “We’re going to miss them as a class.”
