Did you know that March is National Bed Month? If you enjoy sleeping as a hobby or merely lounging around in bed, you’re going to want to keep reading this.

Origins

National Bed Month’s origins date back to the late 20th century and was initiated by The Sleep Council in the UK. The Sleep Council was established in 1990, and National Bed Month became official the following year in 1991. Starting as a campaign to educate others on how sleep is directly correlated with the quality of your bed, National Bed Month is now an international phenomenon.

As the Sleep Council has informed us, and as many of us have probably experienced, the comfort and quality of your bed are paramount in your sleep hygiene. When your bed is uncomfortable, you are more likely to experience difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Additionally, if your mattress isn’t comfortable, you may experience back, neck, and hip discomfort.

Mattress Sizes and Types

There are many different mattresses to choose from. These selections can be broken down by size (twin, full, queen, king, etc.) and other elements like softness, a firm mattress, a memory foam mattress, or even an air mattress. The type of mattress that suits you best is going to depend upon your personal sleep needs. For example, some people prefer memory foam while some people like innerspring mattresses.

Fun fact: Did you know that twin/twin XL beds hold the highest number of hours of sleep? A recent study from Sleep Doctor surveys showed that in November 2022 and February 2023, people who slept on twin/twin XL beds had an average of six hours and fifty-one minutes of sleep out of the ideal amount of seven hours per night. This makes me wonder if those beds have something special in them. Now that I think about it, I slept my best as a freshman in college on the twin/twin XL bed in my dorm!

Sleep Hygiene

Not having a comfortable mattress contributes to a poor sleep environment, which may be the cause of some people’s insomnia. A recent study showed findings that the average age of a mattress is approximately three years and eight months. How many of you are past that time frame? Many of us are! While people may know that they need to get a better mattress, many find the process of discarding their current one to be a hassle.

Thankfully, Mississippi has a fantastic selection of places to upgrade your bed to ensure you get quality sleep.

Can’t Buy a New Mattress Yet?

If, by chance, you’re unable to purchase a new bed at this time, there are other options available for you to make your bed more comfortable. These are:

  • Flip your mattress. Flipping your mattress is the most cost-efficient way to make your bed more comfortable. If the other side of your bed is solid with no mattress, you can swap the head of the mattress to the foot.
  • Buy a mattress cover. Mattress covers are a great option for those whose beds are a little sunken in the middle. A mattress cover will help add some height and comfort to your bed.
  • Change your box spring. Did you know that sometimes, your box spring can wear down over time? That will impact how comfortable your mattress is (or is not).
