Covid-19 has presented us with a new normal for the time being, at least. You may be wondering about Halloween and how to celebrate it safely during this unusual time. First of all, keep in mind that there are Halloween activities that are more likely to result in the spreading of COVID, but that there are safer alternatives. Of course, if you do have Covid-19 or may have been exposed, ensure that you do not give out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Level of Risk for Different Halloween Activities

According to the CDC, some of the higher risk Halloween activities may include traditional trick-or-treating where candy is handed out to children, attending crowded Halloween costume parties that are held indoors, and going to an indoor haunted house that may be crowded. Moderate risk activities may include:

  • going to an open-air haunted forest where the use of masks is enforced and people can maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet.
  • Lower risk activities include carving pumpkins with members of your own household, having a virtual Halloween costume contest, decorating your home, or having a Halloween movie night with the people that you live with.
  • When considering all of these activities, the CDC advises that you do not use a Halloween costume mask in place of cloth masks (unless that Halloween costume mask is made of 2 or more layers of breathable fabric that covers your mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around your face.
